Wall O’ Water For Early Planting & My Simple Trick For Setting Them Up.

    April 30, 2017 by amberhollis918@gmail.com 2 Comments

I have been using  Wall O’ Water season extenders for 6 or 7 years now.  I started out with one package of three and have continued adding more each year. Eventually, they wear out but on average I’d say mine have lasted 5-6 growing seasons. I should add they recommend cleaning out the cells at the end of the year and drying them before storing them. I don’t clean the cells, I just air-dry dry and put them away for the year.

One thing I have perfected over the years is how to efficiently set these up without flooding the backyard and getting soaked in the process.

Check out my video on Wall O’ Waters for early planting and my simple trick for setting them up.

Using this type of spray nozzle will make filling your Wall O’ Water season extenders so much easier.

These can be used a full 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date for your area. For me, the last frost is around May 6th. So that means I could plant starts around the end of March if I wanted to. Not only will these protect my plants from frost, wind, and animals but they also act as a miniature greenhouse around my plant keeping it nice and warm.

A very important step for using these Wall O Waters is to set them up one week prior to planting your starts. When you do this it warms the soil and prevents shocking or stunting the growth of your start. Like my video shows you want to initially fill them ⅔ of the way full so the top closes and makes a teepee. 3-4″ plants are the best size to plant so that none of the plants is sticking out of the top. Once the danger of frost has passed and the plant continues to grow taller you can fill the reservoirs up fully and keep the Wall O’ Water around the plant for another 30-45 days.

Have you used these in your garden? I’d love to hear from you about your experience with Wall O’ Water season extenders.

    Do Wall O’ Waters work?

Yes! Wall O’ Waters work to warm the soil prior to planting and allow gardeners to plant 6-8 weeks earlier than recommended due to frost. Wall O’ Waters is like having a mini greenhouse where ever you need it.

How early can you plant tomatoes with a wall of water?

Typically you can plant 3-4 weeks earlier than the local safe-to-plant date using wall o’ water season extenders.

What is a Wall O Water season extender?

The Wall O’ Water Season Extender is a long-lasting, durable plastic product. It is designed to protect plants during the early growing season and allows gardeners to plant early extending their growing season as well. Wall O’ Waters protects plants from temperatures as low as 12° F, and from winds as strong as 40 mph. Wall O’ waters act as mini greenhouse teepees to protect plants from cold weather, frost, wind, and animals.

Love this! I’ve come to love my wall o water but I always end up soaked when I fill them up. I grow a big vegetable garden in Pocatello, not too far from Meridian (although colder).
