I experimented with creating these delightful enhancements for my coffee for about 6 months, exploring every type of dairy and non-dairy milk available to discern their differences and determine which would yield the ultimate Cold Foam and Sweet Cream. Did you know using your high speed Ninja Blender works amazingly well to grind coffee beans for your morning coffee?
Cold Foam Vs. Sweet Cream
Cold foam and sweet cream are both popular additions to cold coffee drinks, enhancing the flavor and texture, but in their own unique ways. While cold foam is characterized by its light, frothy texture achieved by frothing cold milk, sweet cream offers a rich, sweet flavor from heavy cream and added sweeteners like coffee syrups, simple syrup, or condensed milk.
Cold foam is ideal for adding a frothy, airy element with or without sweetness. A subtle layer and texture to cold beverages such as iced coffee or cold brew coffee. Sweet cream imparts a smooth sweetness and richness to drinks, whether poured directly into coffee or used as a topping.

Equipment:
For making both cold foam and sweet cream the equipment is the same:
- Electric milk frother, I'll be using an Instant Pot Frother Or Handheld frother.
- Measuring cup
- Measuring spoons

Ingredients For Cold Foam:
- Milk (Dairy, or Non-dairy)
- Sweetner (optional)
- Cold brew or Iced coffee of choice
Milk I Tested For Cold Foam
I tested each of these dairy and non-daily milk options to see which has the best results when making cold foam:

Whole Milk: Very thick and smooth foam that does not deflate quickly.

Nonfat Milk: Slight foam, bubbles from arriation don't last long. Thinner than using whole milk.
Vanilla Almond Milk: Consistencey is watery due to it having a hight water content. Does not last long after frothing and is thin.

Vanilla Oat Milk: Much thicker consistenct than almond milk. Airy and light foam. Great for a non-dairy milk and the vanilla flavor is sweet with out adding any sweetener.

Coconut Milk: Did not froth at all, very thin and watery. Not a good option for frothing due to no fat content, coconut cream had much better results.

Coconut Cream & Oat Milk: Made with the cream from coconut milk after it's been referigerated and combined with 1 tbsp. of oat milk. This is a wonderfull smooth a delicious non dairy option.

Instructions:
- Prepare Ingredients: Gather all your ingredients and equipment. Make sure your Instant Pot milk frother is clean and ready to use.
- Measure Ingredients: Start by measuring out ¼ cup of milk. You can adjust the amount based on how much cold foam you want to make.
- Optional Sweetener: Decide if you want your cold foam to be plain or sweetened. You can add simple syrup, or coffee syrup like Torani, Monin, or Davinci. Start with a small amount, like ½-1 teaspoon, and adjust to your preference of sweetness.
- Mix Ingredients: Add, milk & sweetener into the milk frother. On the electric milk frother select the cold foam setting, on the Instant Pot brand there is a snowflake symbol that indicates the cold foam setting.
- Froth: Place the lid securely on the milk frother and turn it on. Select the cold foam setting and let the frother do its magic until the cream is frothed and foamy. This usually takes about 2 minutes.
- Optionally: If you are using a hand held frother add all of the ingredients to a pint size mason jar and froth for about 2-3 minutes or until the milk is light and frothy.
- Serve: Once the cold foam is ready, remove the lid of the milk frother. Pour the foam onto your favorite cold beverages, such as iced coffee or iced tea.
- Storage: Unlike sweet cream, cold foam does not keep. After about 5-6 minutes the cold foam will start to deflate and loose it's consistencey.
- Clean Up: Clean the frother according to the manufacturer's instructions to maintain its performance and longevity.

Milk I Tested For Sweet Cream

I also tested each of these dairy and non-dairy milk options to see which has the best results when combined with sugar-free vanilla syrup makes the best homemade sweet cream.
Whole Milk: results in a very thick and creamy sweet cream.

Heavy Whipping Cream: Heavy cream by its self is like whipped cream. If you like a extra thick soft top sweet cream heavy cream is a great choice.

Combination of Heavy whipping cream and 2% milk: Using a little bit of milk to thin out the heavt cream results in a perfect sweet cream.

Coconut Cream: A wonderful dairy free option after frothing is pillowy soft, creamy and natually sweet.

Combination of Coconut Cream and Oat milk: For a slightly thinner dairy free soft top add a tablespoon or two of oat milk when frothing coconut cream for a thinner creamy texture.

Ingredients For Sweet Cream:
- Heavy cream (or alternitive from above)
- 2% Milk or milk alternative (optional)
- Sweetener of your choice (such as simple syrup, flavored coffee syrup)
- Cold brew or Iced coffee of choice
Instructions:
- Prepare Ingredients: Gather all your ingredients and equipment. Make sure your frother is clean and ready to use.
- Measure Ingredients: Start by measuring out ¼ cup of the heavy cream and 1 tablespoon of 2% milk. You can adjust the amount based on how much sweet cream cold foam you want. This will make about ½ of a cup after frothing. Adding milk will make this slightly thinner and less like whipped cream.
- Add Sweetener: Decide how sweet you want your sweet cream cold foam to be. You can add simple syrup, or coffee syrup like Torani, Monin, or Davinci. Start with a small amount, ½ to 1 teaspoon, and adjust to your sweetness preference. If you're using a liquid sweetener like honey or maple syrup, you might want to use less to avoid thinning out the cream too much.
- Mix Ingredients: Pour the heavy cream, milk, and sweetener into the milk frother. On the electric milk frother select the cold foam setting, on the Instant Pot brand there is a snowflake symbol that indicates the cold foam setting.
- Froth: Place the lid securely on the milk frother and turn it on. Select the cold foam setting and let the frother do its magic until the cream is frothed to your desired consistency. This usually takes about 2 minutes.
- Optionally add all of the ingredients to a pint mason jar and use the hand held milk frother for about 1.5-2 minutes or until the cream becomes thick and pillowy.
- Serve: Once the sweet cream cold foam is ready, remove the lid of the milk frother. Use a spoon to scoop the foam onto your favorite cold beverages, such as iced coffee or iced tea. Enjoy your delicious sweet cream cold foam creation!
- Storage: Store any leftover cold foam in the fridge in a glass mason jar with a lid and use within 3 days.
- Clean Up: After you're done using the milk frother, make sure to clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions to maintain its performance and longevity.
Serving
Once you've found your favorite frothy topping the best way to serve it is on top of your favorite iced coffee drink.
Equipment & Storage
For an easy hands-off experience, I prefer to use an electric frother with a cold foam setting, however, a handheld milk frother or even an immersion blender will work. You'll also need a glass jar with a lid if preparing and storing sweet cream. Cold foam does not store long-term and needs to be used within 5-10 minutes before it loses its light and airy consistency.
